This Is Investigative Journalism?

December 3, 2007

I was watching CNN this morning and at one point, just before going to commercial, they did a quick teaser for their next segment.

“When we return, new details are emerging about the man who took hostages last week at the Rochester, New Hampshire headquarters of Senator Hillary Clinton.”

So what were these new details?  Turns out the man in question had anger issues and needed psychiatric help.

Okay, I might not be an expert on mental health (not even my own), but I’m thinking that most of us figured this out right around the time we heard that he had strapped road flares to his belly and taken the hostages.

It’s funny, until you think about it a little bit.  Remember when journalists deserved our respect?  Remember when we referred to the press as “the Fourth Estate” and considered it the people’s check on the otherwise unbridled power of the government?  How I long for the days of Woodward and Bernstein.
