Rep. Steven King (R-Iowa) Takes a BOW!!

March 8, 2008

Watching this year’s political campaign unfold, I have been struck again and again by the number of idiots running around in our country in positions of influence and power.  It’s one thing to encounter idiots on the highway or in a mall parking lot.  But to find so many of them occupying elective offices, cabinet positions, and news anchor chairs is truly alarming.

For this reason, I’ve decided to start giving out an award every Saturday to a Buffoon Of the Week.  My BOW Awards are really not anything that new — Keith Olbermann (who is decidedly NOT a buffoon) does much the same thing on MSNBC with his “Worst Person In the World” segment.  But I figure, why should he have all the fun?

So, without further ado….

This week’s inaugural Buffoon Of the Week award goes to [drum roll] Representative Steven King (R-Iowa) for saying on a radio talk show yesterday, March 7th, that if Barack Obama won the Presidency, al-Qaeda would “be dancing in the streets in greater numbers than they did on September 11th.”  He based this absurd statement not only on Senator Obama’s promise to begin withdrawing U.S. troops from Iraq upon taking office, but also because of Obama’s Kenyan ancestry and the fact that his middle name is Hussein.  “They’ll be dancing in the streets because of his middle name,” this week’s Buffoon said.  “They’ll be dancing in the streets because of who his father was.”

This man is an elected official, for goodness sake!  He’s a member of Congress!  Aren’t we better than this?  Aren’t we capable as a nation of having an honest discussion of policy differences without resorting to racial and ethnic assaults?  Shouldn’t our national leaders have more to offer than fearmongering and appeals to our basest instincts?  This is a disgrace!

So, Representative Steven King of Iowa, take a BOW!  You’ve earned it.  It’s the first one I’m giving out.  But certainly not the last.  Stay tuned.
