No BOW Award today.  I really didn’t pay much attention to the news this week, and frankly I need a BOW break.

But I did have a funny experience this afternoon:  I was wearing my “photography-guy” hat today instead of my “author-guy” hat.  This weekend is the arts and crafts studio tour here in town, and I did a shift handling sales at the gallery where I display my photography.  The gallery includes not only my photos, but heaps of other art and craftwork by a large number of local artists:  oil paintings and bronze castings and sculptures, textile work and hand-done bookbinding, lots of ceramics — vases, bowls, plates, etc. — as well as a host of other artistic creations.  The gallery offers a remarkable variety of items, representing the work of at least a dozen different people.

Well, one gentleman came in accompanied by his wife, and after looking around at all this stuff, turned to me and asked if I was the artist who had done all this fine work….

This is a strange thing I do for a living.  Yesterday it was all about the new shiny, the momentum of a new book.  Today I was still deeply immersed in the project, but in an entirely different way.  I went over the plot outline I worked up a few weeks ago intending to expand upon it and fill in some details.  And I realized that several of my plot points made no sense from a logical standpoint.  None.  It was a “What the hell was I thinking?!” moment and for a while there it had me in a bit of a panic.  I think I’ve worked things out now; there are still a few details missing, a few gaps in the progression.  But I’ve dealt with the logical flaws and managed to keep the story alive.

Still, wow!  What a roller coaster!  One of the comments to yesterday’s post, from my good friend Jana Oliver, compared the early days with a new book to a new romance.  Very apt.  Well, today my book and I had our first fight….

Coming Up For Air

December 4, 2008

Sometimes I will look for anything I might do other than write.  If there are household chores that need attention, I’ll leap at the chance to do them.  I’ll find all sorts of distractions; anything at all to avoid my current book.

And then there are those other times, when I neglect everything else in life because all I want to do is work on the current WIP.  I’m in this mode right now.  I meant to post on Tuesday and Wednesday, but I couldn’t tear myself away from my new project.  I’m having a blast.  I’m getting a lot written, and I love how it’s coming out so far.  I’m not going to tell you any more than that because keeping the ideas pent up inside is part of what’s giving me so much momentum each day.

But I wanted to check in, say hi, let you all know I’m still alive.  And now, if you don’t mind, I’m headed back to my shiny new toy.

*Waves, then vanishes again.*
